The stars hum softly tonight.

Little Nellie pressed her nose against the cold windowpane, watching the sky turn from purple to deep midnight blue. One by one, the stars began to appear, twinkling like tiny silver bells.

“Mama,” Nellie whispered, “do you hear that?”

Her mother smiled and brushed a curl from Nellie’s forehead. “Hear what, my sweet?”

“The stars,” Nellie said. “They’re humming.”

And they were! A gentle melody floated down from the heavens—soft as butterfly wings, warm as cocoa, sweet as honey drizzled on toast.

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm, sang the stars. Hmmmm-mmm-mmm.

“I’ve never heard them before,” Nellie breathed.

“Perhaps,” said Mama, tucking Nellie into bed, “they only hum for children who are ready to listen.”

Nellie snuggled under her quilt—the one with moons and clouds stitched in silver thread—and closed her eyes. But she didn’t fall asleep. Not yet. Because the humming grew louder, and suddenly, something magical happened.

Her bed began to rise.

Up, up, up it floated, right through the ceiling (which turned soft and shimmery like soap bubbles). Up past the treetops where sleepy birds tucked their heads beneath their wings. Up past the clouds that looked like sleeping sheep. Up, up, up until Nellie was floating among the stars themselves.

“Hello!” called a friendly voice.

Nellie opened her eyes wide. There, sitting on a crescent moon that curved like a golden smile, was a star—but not just any star. This star had kind eyes and wore a nightcap stitched with tiny constellations.

“I’m Stellan,” said the star. “I’m the Conductor of the Nighttime Symphony.”

“The what?” asked Nellie.

“Every night,” Stellan explained, floating closer, “all the stars gather to hum the Universe to sleep. We hum for the flowers so they’ll close their petals. We hum for the rabbits in their burrows. We hum for the whales in the deep, deep ocean. And we hum for children like you.”

“Why do you hum?” Nellie asked.

Stellan’s light glowed warmer. “Because everyone needs a lullaby, Nellie. Even the moon. Even the planets. Even the dark spaces between the stars need to know they’re not alone.”

Just then, thousands of stars began gathering around them—big stars and little stars, bright ones and shy ones, stars that sparkled blue and stars that glowed gold.

“It’s almost time,” Stellan announced. “Will you help us tonight, Nellie? Will you hum with us?”

Nellie nodded, her heart fluttering with joy.

Stellan raised his glowing arms like a conductor with a baton. “Ready, everyone? And a-one, and a-two, and a…”

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm, hummed the stars.

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm, hummed Nellie.

The sound swirled around her like a gentle wind. It wrapped around the Earth like a cozy blanket. Nellie could feel it traveling—down to the mountains, across the seas, through the forests, into every home where children were climbing into bed.

As they hummed, Nellie saw magical things:

She saw a grumpy badger yawn and curl up in his den.

She saw a little boy in a faraway city finally stop crying and smile.

She saw flowers fold their petals like hands pressed together in prayer.

She saw the ocean waves slow their dancing and rock gently, gently, gently.

“It’s working!” Nellie laughed.

“It always does,” Stellan winked. “The humming never fails. It reminds everyone that nighttime isn’t scary—it’s peaceful. It isn’t lonely—it’s full of friends. The darkness isn’t empty—it’s actually full of light, if you know how to look.”

They hummed and hummed until Nellie’s eyes grew heavy. The stars’ melody wrapped around her like Mama’s arms.

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm. Hmmmm-mmm-mmm.

“Time for you to sleep now, little one,” Stellan whispered softly.

“But I want to keep helping,” Nellie murmured, though she could barely keep her eyes open.

“You will,” Stellan promised. “Every night when you close your eyes and listen, you’ll hear us. And every time you hum along—even in your dreams—you’ll be helping us sing the world to sleep.”

Nellie’s bed began to float downward, gentle as a feather. Down past the clouds. Down past the treetops. Down through the shimmery ceiling that became solid again.

When she settled back in her room, everything looked the same as before. But it also felt different. Warmer. Kinder. More magical.

Mama was still sitting beside her bed, though it seemed like no time had passed at all.

“Did you hear them?” Nellie whispered.

“I heard you humming,” Mama said softly, kissing her forehead. “And it was the most beautiful sound in the world.”

Nellie smiled and closed her eyes.

From outside the window, the stars continued their gentle song.

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm. Hmmmm-mmm-mmm.

And this time, tucked safe and warm in her bed, Nellie hummed with them. She hummed for the flowers and the rabbits. She hummed for the whales and the children. She hummed for Mama and for Stellan and for anyone who needed to know they weren’t alone.

She hummed until the humming turned into dreaming.

And the stars hummed softly, softly, softly…

Until everything in the world was peaceful and still.

The stars hum softly tonight.

They hum for me.

They hum for you.

They hum for everyone who needs a lullaby.

So close your eyes, little one.

Listen closely.

Can you hear them?

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm.

Hmmmm-mmm-mmm.

Sweet dreams.
