The Slumber Parade of Pillow Town

Every night when Emmett closed his eyes, something magical happened. His bedroom didn’t stay a bedroom for long. Oh no! The moment his head touched his pillow, whoooosh—he tumbled softly through clouds of cotton and landed in the most extraordinary place: Pillow Town.
Pillow Town was exactly what it sounded like. The houses were made of pillows—some striped, some spotted, some as fluffy as marshmallows. The streets were lined with silky pillowcases that rippled like gentle streams. Even the trees were topped with tufts of pillow stuffing that swayed in the breeze like the softest snow.
Tonight, when Emmett arrived, something special was happening. Mayor Cushion, a very important-looking throw pillow with golden tassels, was standing on a stage made of stacked mattresses.
“Attention, attention!” Mayor Cushion announced, his tassels swinging excitedly. “Tonight is the night of the Great Slumber Parade! Every creature in Pillow Town will march to help the world fall asleep. And this year, we have a special guest—Emmett!”
“Me?” Emmett squeaked, looking down at his dinosaur pajamas.
“Yes, YOU!” cheered a small voice. Emmett looked down to see a tiny pillow sprite no bigger than his hand. She wore a sleeping cap covered in silver stars that twinkled even in the dim light. “I’m Drowsy,” she said, yawning. “I’m always yawning. That’s my job! And tonight, you get to lead the parade with us!”
Before Emmett could say “But I’ve never led a parade before,” Drowsy sprinkled him with what looked like glittering dandelion fluff. Suddenly, Emmett was wearing a magnificent cape made entirely of the softest bedsheet silk, embroidered with moons and stars.
“The parade is about to begin!” announced Mayor Cushion. “Everyone, take your positions!”
Toot-toot-toooot! A trumpet made of a rolled-up pillowcase sounded, and the most wonderful parade Emmett had ever seen began to form.
First came the Counting Sheep, bouncing along on springs hidden in their fluffy bodies. “One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, four!” they called out in perfect rhythm. There were exactly one hundred of them, and each one wore a tiny sleeping cap. The littlest sheep, who was number one hundred, winked at Emmett.
Next came the Dream Weavers—long, elegant beings that looked like ribbons of silk in every color imaginable. They twisted and twirled through the air, leaving trails of sparkles that formed pictures: a smiling sun, a friendly dragon, a castle made of birthday cake. “These are tomorrow’s dreams!” they whispered as they danced past.
Then stomp, stomp, stomp—the Yawn Giants arrived. They were big, fuzzy creatures who looked like walking teddy bears made of the coziest blankets. Every few steps, they would yawn enormously, and their yawns were so catching that Emmett felt his own mouth opening wide. “Aaaahhhhh-YAWN!” Even watching someone else yawn was making him sleepy!
“The Yawn Giants spread sleepiness wherever they go,” Drowsy explained, yawning herself. “Very important work. See? I told you—I can’t stop yawning!”
The Lullaby Birds flew overhead next, singing the most beautiful songs Emmett had ever heard. Their melodies were soft and sweet, like a grandmother humming while rocking a baby. “Hush now, close your eyes, watch the starlight in the skies…”
Following them came the Snuggle Bugs—adorable round creatures covered in velvet who rolled along like little balls. Whenever they bumped into something, they gave it a cozy hug. One Snuggle Bug rolled right up to Emmett’s leg and hugged it warmly before continuing on its way.
“Now it’s our turn to march!” said Drowsy, tugging on Emmett’s cape. “Come on!”
Emmett and Drowsy walked to the front of the parade. Mayor Cushion handed Emmett a special staff—it looked like a star on a stick, glowing with gentle golden light.
“As parade leader,” said Mayor Cushion seriously, “you must wave the Star of Slumber and guide everyone through Pillow Town. The magic of the parade will spread sleepiness and sweet dreams to every corner of the world!”
Emmett held the star high, and the parade began to move. The streets of Pillow Town were lined with cheering pillowcases and sleepy stuffed animals waving goodnight. As the parade marched along, something wonderful happened—everything in Pillow Town began to glow with a soft, peaceful light.
They passed the Blanket Fort Forest, where quilted trees rustled in a warm breeze. They marched by the Lake of Calm, where the water was smooth as silk and reflected a sky full of gentle stars. They crossed the Bridge of Deep Rest, which swayed peacefully with each step.
With every turn they made, Emmett noticed that the lights in Pillow Town’s windows were dimming, one by one. The inhabitants were falling asleep, ready for wonderful dreams.
“The parade is working!” Drowsy said, yawning extra wide. “Everyone is getting sleepy! Even me—and I’m already the sleepiest sprite in town!”
The Counting Sheep continued their gentle count: “Ninety-seven sheep, ninety-eight sheep, ninety-nine sheep…” The Yawn Giants yawned so big that Emmett yawned three times in a row. The Lullaby Birds’ songs grew softer and sweeter. Even the Snuggle Bugs were moving slower, ready for hugs and rest.
Finally, the parade arrived back at the Town Square, where it had begun. Mayor Cushion climbed onto his mattress stage one more time.
“The Slumber Parade has been a magnificent success!” he announced quietly, for everyone was very sleepy now. “Emmett, you have been a wonderful parade leader. The whole world is getting ready for sleep thanks to you and all our friends. Now it’s time for everyone to rest.”
One by one, the parade participants found cozy spots to settle down. The Counting Sheep curled up in a fluffy pile. The Dream Weavers folded themselves into silky nests. The Yawn Giants lay down and immediately began to snore like gentle thunder. The Lullaby Birds tucked their heads under their wings. The Snuggle Bugs huddled together in one big, warm hug.
Drowsy took Emmett’s hand. “Time for you to go back home,” she whispered. “But remember—every night when you close your eyes, the Slumber Parade is happening somewhere, helping everyone find peaceful sleep.”
“Will I see you again?” Emmett asked.
“Every night,” Drowsy promised, her starry cap twinkling. “Sweet dreams, Emmett.”
The sprite blew a handful of glittering sleepy-dust toward him, and Emmett felt himself floating gently upward, through the soft clouds, back… back… back…
Until his head was resting on his own pillow in his own bed.
Through his window, Emmett could see the moon smiling down at him. From somewhere far away—or maybe not so far—he thought he could hear the faint sound of a pillowcase trumpet and the Lullaby Birds singing their sweet songs.
Emmett yawned, snuggled deeper into his blankets, and smiled. He had led the Slumber Parade! And tomorrow night, there would be new adventures in Pillow Town. But for now, it was time to sleep, time to dream, time to rest.
“One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, four…” Emmett whispered to himself, his eyes growing heavy.
And before he could count to five, Emmett was fast asleep, dreaming of parades and yawns and friendly sprites with starry caps, while somewhere in the gentle darkness, the magic of Pillow Town watched over him.
The End
Goodnight, sleep tight, and sweet dreams.
